Applications for our next residency in spring 2022 are now open.

Overview

Work on your own project while being supported and surrounded by a community of creatives, practitioners, students and visionaries. Explore your own leadership skills, challenge yourself and be part of a unique learning experience.

As a resident, you apply with a project or project idea and spend four intense weeks developing your project while working on your leadership skills and being part of an inspiring and diverse community.
Regular milestones help you stay on track and support you to learn from each other. Leadership and community workshops allow you to work on your own leadership skills and to expand your toolbox as a change maker.

“You cannot buy the revolution.
You cannot make the revolution.
You can only be the revolution.
It is in your spirit, or it is nowhere.”

― Ursula K. Le Guin

Learning from Activism

The content input and workshops during this year’s Residency focus on what we can learn about change-making and leadership through the lenses of activism. Each week of the residency we’ll take a specific angle on change-making and you get to connect to your cause, explore different activist practices, and on creating and lead change movements.

Week 1: Community & Experience Design (short week)
Week One is all about creating a magical, bonding and inspirational arrival experience for you as residents. Community plays a huge role on the work we do and we want to take time to connect, get to know each other and create a sense of belonging.

Week 2: Direction & Self-Leadership
In Week Two we spend time reflecting on our own individual identities, our paths, and directions. This is very different for each of us, depending on where we're at and what challenges we face. This is an intense, beautiful and challenging week full of learnings.

Week 3: Creating Change
In Week Three we focus on how we create real change. We will learn from a range of different activists and change-makers, and expand our own toolbox as creators, activists and do-ers. This is a hands-on, experimental, and colourful week.

Week 4: Leading Movements
Week Four is about turning ideas for change into sustainable, systemic movements. You cannot change the world alone, so we dive deep into the mind-blowing complexity of creating real change.

Week 5: Final Exhibition & Presentations
Finally, it's time for each of our residents to shine and share their work. In the past, residents have chosen to share their projects in the form of workshops, pitches, installations and interactions. It's really up to you how big or small you want to share. Apart from presentations, we also take time to reflect on our learning and, of course, celebrate in style.

Who can apply?

We are looking for individuals who are excited to create change, who want to challenge the status quo, and who are willing to do their part in making the world a better place. Residents will have a great learning journey if they come with an open mind, are ready to learn and love to work creatively and collaboratively.

We are looking for makers, activists, optimists, doers, rebels, creatives, and out-of-the-box thinkers.

We embrace diversity and encourage anyone to apply regardless of race, color, religious creed, sex, gender, national origin, citizenship status, age, physical or mental disability, sexual orientation, marital or parental status.

Why participate?

You have this idea that's been sitting in a drawer for the last year? You need a break from your everyday job? You want to make a change in your life? You want to take time to focus on something that's truly meaningful for you? You want to learn new skills and work on yourself? You don't quite know how to get started, or don't want to do this alone?

The residency is the chance for you to immerse in the Kaospilot community, to share your skills, build things together, to learn from others and yourself, and to expand your horizon. It's the chance to be part of a unique residency cohort, and thus to shape and contribute to our growing Berlin community.

The Big Vision

Kaospilot+ Berlin is on a mission to create learning formats that empower individuals to flourish, teams and communities to work together, and that help make the world a better place. We love learning and strive to be an inspiration for others. That's why we create educational journeys that help you leave your comfort zone, and help you learn from each other.

    Once here, you will...

    • experience the Kaospilot approach
    • experience a radically collaborative way of working
    • re-narrate your own potential when it comes to learning
    • gain a new understanding of community and collaboration
    • focus on and create your own project
    • work in a supportive community - support others and receive support for your project
    • be part of a community of inspiring individuals
    • work on and challenge cutting edge themes such as... new work, systems thinking, and leadership

    Scholarships

For this year's residency, we offer two types of scholarships:

    Full Scholarships For Refugees

These days and weeks the world’s turbulence increased, causing even more people to be on the run and flee their home countries. In order to support, we offer a couple of full scholarships for refugees to participate in our Berlin Residency Programme 2022. If you are a refugee, whether because of the current war in Ukraine or for other reasons, we encourage you to apply.

Half Scholarships for people developing solutions to respond to the current challenges caused by the war in Ukraine

Are you currently developing a solution in the context of the current challenges emerging from the war in Ukraine? We would like to support you and your project in that process.

    How to apply
Please indicate in your residency application which type of scholarship you apply for and tell us why we should select you for this specific scholarship.
We encourage especially BIPoC and people from LGBTQI+ communities to send their applications for both scholarship types.

The deadline for applying is March 20th, 2021, at 12:00 AM (Berlin Time).

If you would like to support us in offering scholarships you have the option to sponsor an additional half or full scholarship.

    FAQ

    Is the residency full-time?

Yes. The residency is full-time (we consider full-time Mon-Fri). However, this doesn't mean that there will be a programme happening all the time. A lot of the time you will work independently on your projects. In our experience, you will make the most out of the residency if during these four weeks you don't have other jobs or side projects going on.

What is included in the participation fee?

The fee covers your participation in the program and workshops, access to a working space, water, coffee, and snacks. It does not cover accommodation, travel expenses, or meals.

How do German COVID regulations affect the residency?

The safety and wellbeing of our community is priority. We will be operating within the government guidelines and the delivery format and studios will reflect this. In case COVID regulations restrict us from working in person we keep the option to cancel the residency. In this case any fees already paid will be reimbursed.

Where will the residency take place?

We will be based at our Berlin campus in Berlin-Tempelhof, next to the Tempelhofer Feld.

Can I apply for a scholarship or other financial support?

We try our best to make our programmes financially affordable to everyone interested. If you would like to participate but have concerns how to finance the residency, please apply through the application form and send an additional email to edda@kaospilot.de

How many residents do you accept?

We will invite a maximum 20 residents to join the programme.

Do I have to be an activist to apply?

No, you don’t have to be an activist or identify as one to participate. We chose the focus on activism as we think that leadership in the future needs to draw inspiration from activist movements to radically enable people to practice their causes and co-create transformation. In our assessment of your application, we will look at the potential for positive impact your project aims at, as the residency is for people who have the courage to take over responsibility and steer us towards a more sustainable future.

When will I know if I got in?

We will notify applicants mid March.

I have another question, how can I contact you?

Feel free to reach out to edda@kaospilot.de for any additional questions.
